Squircles is finally finished. It is about 60 inches square. It is based upon a challenge that Audrey from the blog QuiltyFolk issued called Quilty365.
Details:
- Instead of circles – I chose to do freehand cut squircles.
- They are hand appliquéd onto 4 & 1/2″ blocks – except for a few rogue blocks that were put onto double sized blocks.
- Set 10×10 blocks.
- Pink border was freehand cut.
- Charcoal border started as a plain charcoal (boring!) and then I painted, stencilled and wrote on it.
- Used QuiltLite as the batting (it’s that woven light weight interfacing-type stuff which I think is not only the BOMB to quilt with but is the perfect weight for our climate).
- Big stitch quilted around each squircle and then approximately 1/4″ outside the squircle. Stitches in the squircles were done with Eleganza thread in multi colors. Also did random criss-cross lines of big stitching in the outer border in a hot pink.
- No picture – but I used the wrong side of the backing fabric as the right side was too defined.
- After I thought it was done, ‘it’ asked to have bright pink embroidery added. So, what was I to do? I complied by adding freeform embroidery to about a third of the blocks. (Squircles is now a happy quilt!).

On a personal note – WE HAVE A/C! Yes, we finally bit the bullet and had air conditioning installed. No more afternoons sitting in the garage in the car with the air running.
Also, my quilt mojo seems to have returned and I’ve been quilting like a woman possessed the last 4-5 days. Fun, fun, fun!
You wouldn’t think someone from SD with its extremes of temperature would be such a weather wimp. 😉
Looks who’s talking Mr. Weather Wimp! 🙂
I love this quilt! The organic round shapes are amazing. Love it!
Thank you Ariane!
Oh I love your sqircles so much! The big stitch quilting adds a gorgeous texture and the added pink is just pure fun! This is definitely one of my favorites of those I’ve seen– those funky circles are just perfect! So wonderful when our mojo returns too.😊
Thanks Audrey for your kind comments! And I agree….returning mojo is fab!
Yes! Your squircles have such personality. The prefect shape to defiantly freehand needleturn. I love the prints you chose as well as the mixture of background squares and rectangles. Pink quilting is a great idea. With every decision you’ve hit the nail on the head. Thanks for linking with AHIQ. Enjoy the A/C.
Thank you Ann – not only for your thoughts and compliments but for your encouragement!
This turned out great. Thanks for sharing your process on it, too. I love to hear how things developed.
Thanks Melanie! It is good to hear the back story on things, isn’t it? That’s one of the things I appreciate about your blog. 🙂
Please enter this in a show…any show…I love this quilt. And when and if you ever get ready to sell it, let me know and I’ll do some checking around with my friends. Beautiful!!!
Thanks bud! You are one of my biggest fans!
Wow! This quilt is gorgeous! I love the fabrics you used, the big stitches and the pink embroidery is the perfect addition. A great color scheme too!
Thank you Sharon. I really am enjoying it (it’s on my dining room table right now). It was fun to just let ‘it’ talk to me and see where I ended up.
Congrats! on the newly completed quilt. It’s AWESOME!!!
Thanks Joy!
That is wonderful – I love the fabrics and the design!
Thanks Tierney! It was a really fun quilt to do. Thanks to Quilty365 for the inspiration.
One of the best Quilty 365s I’ve seen! It’s wonderful!
Now THAT is high praise, Cathy as I’ve seen some stunning ones! Thank you so much.
A really unique quilt and congrats on finishing it. The pink touchs were an excellent choice.
Thanks Paula. Yeah, I knew in the beginning that it needed to be quilted with pink thread – I should have gone with my instincts from the beginning rather than second guessing myself. I got there in the end though.
OMG. I absolutely love it! You are so creative….. and the quilt just makes me smile every time I look at it.
