I love this quilt! Is it ok to love your own work so much? I think so.
English paper pieced the hexagons – many of them on our trip to Austria and USA a few years back. Mainly Japanese Taupe fabrics but a few wild cards thrown in for good measure. Border is crumb pieced from left overs. Back was hand painted and dyed using inspiration from that Palomino horse I saw at the Milton Show last year (remember? Mr. W had to take a picture of it?). Used quilters light batting (VERY lightweight). Hand quilted it using Presencia 12 threads – the left overs from my New York Beauty quilt. Followed Bonnie Hunter‘s idea for a freeform Baptist Fan pattern – although I changed it up and made a template with holes in it. (I would use this technique again.)
Did I mention how much I love it? It’s a keeper. I think what I love so much about it (apart from loving the entire process) is that it is a juxtaposition or amalgamation of both traditional and modern quilting styles. (As a side note, I’m not really into the whole “MODERN” quilt philosophy – I personally think it’s a bit ‘oh look at me’ type of thinking. I honestly don’t believe there is really anything new and modern about quilting – it’s just reinterpretations of what has been done in the past. Having said that – I do think it’s a combo of styles and I like that idea. I might try it again in the future.)
This quilt definitely falls into the ‘slow quilting’ or ‘slow stitching’ category. Which I’m loving more and more. Although I enjoy the speed of machine quilting (both piecing and quilting) – I am finding more and more that I love the pleasure of sitting and doing hand stitching. Hand stitching of any kind really……knitting, crochet, quilting, embroidery. I’m even thinking to try my hand at hand piecing as I want to make Circle Games by Jen Kingwell.
That’s about it. Another UFO completed. I was looking at my list of 2015 UFOs and it is getting down there. I think I only have about 10 projects left on it. I’ve resisted adding many – other than a few baby quilts and gift quilts – so I’m hopeful by the end of the year, I’ll be current. Then again…..Houston is looming……perhaps all bets are off at this point.
