I’ve completed some of the appliqué on a couple of my NYB sections. I added some oak leaves using a raw edge appliqué technique (lower right in photo). Then I added some more wisteria embroidery (upper right in photo). Oh, and I embroidered the circles inside the large circle to add some movement (lower left).
I’m also remembering why I said I didn’t ever want to do another New York Beauty quilt again – it’s because of pulling the paper out. Mr. W volunteered to learn how to remove the paper from the back of these blocks…….am I not the most fortunate woman in the world? I mean really…….how many men out there would VOLUNTEER to do this? I am a blessed woman.
I decided to write on the background of one of the blocks. This is truly turning into my version of a Jude Hill ‘spirit cloth’ (I still don’t have a name for it). I bought 2 fabric pens at the office supply store – tested them on the fabric and then went to town writing an essay written by Ernest Holmes called “She Let Go”. It’s one of my favorite essays of all time. The blank spot is where I’ll applique’ two layered NYB blocks.
Here you can see the eco-printed fabric I included as a background.
Here’s the full essay if you’re interested:
She let go.
She let go. Without a thought or a word, she let go.
She let go of the fear.
She let go of the judgments.
She let go of the confluence of opinions swarming around her head.
She let go of the committee of indecision within her.
She let go of all the ‘right’ reasons.
Wholly and completely, without hesitation or worry, she just let go.
She didn’t ask anyone for advice.
She didn’t read a book on how to let go.
She didn’t search the scriptures.
She just let go.
She let go of all of the memories that held her back.
She let go of all of the anxiety that kept her from moving forward.
She let go of the planning and all of the calculations about how to do
it just right.
She didn’t promise to let go.
She didn’t journal about it.
She didn’t write the projected date in her Day-Timer.
She made no public announcement and put no ad in the paper.
She didn’t check the weather report or read her daily horoscope.
She just let go.
She didn’t analyze whether she should let go.
She didn’t call her friends to discuss the matter.
She didn’t do a five-step Spiritual Mind Treatment.
She didn’t call the prayer line.
She didn’t utter one word.
She just let go.
No one was around when it happened.
There was no applause or congratulations.
No one thanked her or praised her.
No one noticed a thing.
Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go.
There was no effort.
There was no struggle.
It wasn’t good and it wasn’t bad.
It was what it was, and it is just that.
In the space of letting go, she let it all be.
A small smile came over her face.
A light breeze blew through her. And the sun and the moon shone
forevermore…”
– Ernest Holmes.
That is so awesome but that is definitely not a block that is on my “to do” list!!! You go girl (and guy!)! Hugs, D
Thanks Doreen. I don’t think I’ll do a THIRD NYB quilt though. Once I get this one done – it might be enough.
The only reason I am doing it is because she says Scott P does it for Kay.
Ha! I KNOW you wouldn’t believe that bull hockey!
He makes $hit up, doesn’t he?
You are such a trouble maker, Mr. W! xo
You are awesome!
Thanks Mary. And, did I read on your blog that you’re doing one also? COOL BEANS!
Maybe I won’t post my progress. Yours is awesome!!!
Yours looks fabulous, Candy. I love your colors.
Love the blocks. Love the words even more.
