I’m a big believer in keeping my feet firmly planted in today because truly – that’s all we know for sure that we have…THIS MOMENT. Now THIS moment. Anyway….having said that, I’m thinking about my creative focus for 2013.
In 2012, I tackled, embraced and threw myself into learning free motion quilting. And, I’m quite pleased with myself. Not only the results that I’ve achieved, but that I’ve stuck with both the SewCalGal monthly tutorials and the Leah Day weekly lessons. Not to mention I’ve taken a couple workshops from different local instructors (thank you Deborah Louie!).
By no stretch of the imagination do I think I’ve learned all I can about free motion quilting – but I think I have enough of a knowledge base that it’s almost time to move on to learning something new. (And obviously to keep practicing my new FMQ skills.)
I’ve played around with eco-dyeing, rusting and general fabric dyeing off and on but I’m ready to make it my focus for 2013. There are so many different ways of manipulating fabric with organic material and paints that I think I could well and truly spend years doing different things and not run out of things to try.
I’ve been pouring over the book Eco Dyeing by India Flint and also the 3 books by Kimberly Baxter Packwood. I’ve also been spending copious amounts of time on the blogs by Arlee Barr and Jennifer Coyne Qudeen. Then there is the Natural Surfaces forum which has a ton of information available.
Actually – I don’t think I’m going to be able to wait until 2013…..I’ve already started collecting things and getting myself ready. I find myself waking up at night thinking about the process – and thinking about what fabrics I have that I might be able to try this eco-printing on (like light color flannels?). I feel like a mad scientist of sorts – pretty bizarre for a gal who nearly flunked out of Science in High School!
