Here’s another FMQ practice quilt.
Fabrics? I think I was given these by some quilt peeps as a gift – they might be Amy Butler fabrics. I don’t really have a destination planned for this quilt. It was a top I made last year when I was bored and just needed to sew (therapy sewing?).
I ran across the quilting pattern called ‘orange peel” on the site Oh Fransson and thought it might work well for my Gramcraker Squares quilt but wanted to do a test run/practice run first so this top received the nod.
Quilt buddy Pam and I pin basted it at the fire shed one sunny afternoon last week.
Starting in the middle at the top, I did the curves free hand – no marking – working my way down a line of squares and then back up again. Some of my curves are a bit dodgy but overall, I think it looks ok. I really like the secondary pattern that it makes. I especially like the back.
This quilt is about 55″x55″ and it’s probably about the biggest I want to go with my home sewing machine. It really filled up the opening – so much that it was tight and difficult to move at times.
I considered pushing my skill level to the limit and doing a feather along the outside border but I chickened out and did a simple large stipple. I just wasn’t up to tackling feathers on that scale. I will though……one of these days.
Now all that is left is to bind it and post it to my 2012 finished project page! Maybe during Rugby this weekend?
Nice job! Did you mark that Orange Peel pattern or wing it? I’m with you…don’t think I’m ready to do feathers on a border. Once you start, if you have problems, you basically have two choices. You can either soldier on with a frustrating border or you can “unsew”. Neither option is very appealing!
Totally wing-ed it (wong it?). Yeah…..I just wasn’t up for the feather challenge yet.
Looks great! I need something to practice on. I’ve been seeing a lot of quilts quilted with a Baptist Fan (I think that’s what it’s called) design and I’d like to try that one. I’m wondering if what I’ve been seeing has been done on a long arm machine.
oh…..I love Baptist Fan but it scares me! It seems so difficult….
Yep…that’s what I thought…looked difficult. But it’s so darn pretty!!
So very nice! Sometimes just “baby steps” in this ‘quilting thing’ carries us along just fine. You’ll know when you are really ready to jump in and not look back. I haven’t done that quilting pattern, yet, but have always thought it was so appealing–so many of the piecing patterns I do are geometric and the softness of ‘orange peel’ is such a nice contrast!! Well done!!!! Hugs, Doreen
So true, Doreen. Geographically…..where about are you? Southern Minnesota? Wondering if you had storm damage this weekend?
Located in extreme S.E. MN (30 miles south of Winona and 30 miles west of La Crosse,WI. The storms passed through, starting about 10:00 pm, with a lot of wind (still here!) and rains. Not much else. Near the Twin Cities there were reports of hail and a couple tornadoes but nothing like that here. So thankful! Now, windy & rainy and 47F-chilly compared to yesterday. The winds didn’t seem to produce any damage so far as I can see. Lots of trees around us….all seem ok. Our place is a little 20+ acre hobby farm surrounded be large acreage….nearest neighbor is a mile away. Busy day today. Hope to post later! Hugs, D
Nice looking – what size is everything?
Thanks. This one is about 55×55.
