This week my FMQ project has been my new yoga bag.
I bought a new lululemon (pronounced ‘lulu’ ‘lemon’) mat and it’s thicker than my old mat. Enter an excuse for a new bag project!
I found a pattern (for F*R*E*E) at Sew4Home. Of course I needed to tweak it just a little. A zippered inside pocket would be nice for money and keys. Also, some open pockets for my jellies, strap and socks. The original pattern didn’t call for any batting or quilting – just a bag with lining.
Valerie from My Patch still had some of the decorator bird fabric from Prints Charming so that with some coordinating fabric for the lining and straps made it perfect.
I didn’t want to add extra weight to the bag but I did want it to have a little body so I used a piece of lightweight flannel for the back of the quilting with a layer of puffy iron-on interfacing in-between (the stuff I use for backing embroidery projects).
Only problem? Umm……when I did my trial run with the new lululemon mat I realised that the new mat is about 3 inches WIDER than a standard mat so it is a really tight squeeze. Crap. I might need to make another one that is just a bit bigger. We’ll see……
Linking in with Leah! Be sure to check out the artsy-fartsy stuff she’s been up to lately.

That is one beautiful bag!! I have done the same thing….finished a project only to discover the dimensions I thought were correct were a tad off (and, of course, the wrong direction!). Well, one really can’t have too many of those types of bags, can one?????
No….as a recovering ‘bag whore’, I know that I can’t have too many bags.
Beautiful bag. And isn’t it funny how Leah can be so artsy, and still level headed and practical.
Totally cool about Leah. I absolutely love her frankness too. She doesn’t pussy foot around – calls it as she see it. SO refreshing.
Hi. I love this bag, and found the pattern you went off of. I was wondering how you went about quilting it. Love the look of this! Thanks.
Megan
Thanks Megan. I just layered & pinned it like a quilt (top fabric, batting and my lining fabric) then quilted it in wavy lines. I didn’t do a whole lot of quilting – just enough to hold the layers together and give a little texture. However, a person could quilt it more heavily if they wanted to.
